Today we caught up with Alan Howley who is a “Sometime actor, full time dad. A DYTer from the mid 1980s (ouch!).” After his time in Dublin Youth Theatre Alan went on to study performance at Dartington College of Arts, Devon. What has Alan being doing since? “Have worked as an actor since about 1990, mostly in theatre but recently am best known as Eoghan O’Brien from Fair City.” Aha! That’s where we know that face from 🙂
You can find Alan online on Twitter @BreachandQuinn – we asked him to tell us more about Breach & Quinn: “I’m one half of Breach & Quinn – our show SCORE was at Fringe in 2015 as well as around the country and overseas.”
What has his experience of The 24 Hour Plays in aid of Dublin Youth Theatre supported by BNP Paribas Real Estate been to date, “I’m a 24 Hour Plays virgin.” Speaking of which, what would Alan tell his teenage self if he could have a heart to heart with him now we wondered, “Time spent worrying about and trying to be cool is wasted energy. Relax – you’re okay (probably). ”
We asked Alan what theatrical experience had the greatest impact on him? He replied “Abattoir Ferme ‘Tourniquet’ at Summerhall Edinburgh, 2013 and Anja Muller ‘La Mula’ at Studio Buhne Cologne, 2016. Both amazing – ballsy, challenging, rigorous, witty, mind melting.”
Actors in The 24 Hour Plays: Dublin are asked to bring a prop and a costume to the Meet and Greet on the Saturday night to kick off the #24HrDub process. Some pretty crazy items have been brought over the years so we asked Alan what was the strangest costume he had to wear during his theatrical career. He replied without hesitation, “Ballgown, high heels, powdered wig, nose painted gold for ‘The Nose’ with Performance Corporation” (directed by a #24HrDub veteran, Tom Swift!)
